What Makes a Clay Body Stoneware

A clay body is a recipe, not a natural product dug out of the ground ready to use. Understanding the ingredients explains most of what a finished pot does.

Potters talk about a clay body rather than about clay, and the phrasing is deliberate. Almost no clay used in a working pottery arrives as a single material. It is blended, and the blend is designed to do several jobs at once: hold a shape while wet, survive drying without cracking, mature at a chosen temperature, and end up a colour the glazes suit.

The plastic part

The component that makes clay behave like clay is a group of minerals formed by the long weathering of feldspathic rock. Their particles are flat and extremely small, and when they are wet those plates slide over one another while surface tension holds them together. That is plasticity, and it is the entire reason a lump of this material can be pulled into a wall a few millimetres thick and stay standing.

Ball clay is the most plastic of the common ingredients and is added in small amounts to make a body workable. Kaolin is far less plastic but very refractory, meaning it withstands high heat, and it is what keeps a body from slumping in the kiln. A body made only of ball clay would throw beautifully and warp badly. A body made only of kaolin would be almost impossible to throw at all.

The part that lowers the melting point

Left alone, a pure clay mixture would need an impractically hot kiln to vitrify. Fluxes solve that. Feldspar is the usual one, and it begins to melt at stoneware temperatures, forming a glassy phase that flows between the unmelted particles and locks them together as the kiln cools.

Vitrification is not the clay melting. It is a small amount of glass forming inside a body that is otherwise still solid, and gluing it from within.

How much flux a body carries decides where it matures. Too little and the pot stays porous and weak. Too much and it slumps, bloats, or sticks to the kiln shelf. The window between those two outcomes is narrower than most people expect, which is why potters talk about firing temperature in terms of specific cones rather than approximate degrees.

The part that keeps it open

The third ingredient is a non-plastic filler, most often ground quartz or a coarse grog made from fired clay that has been crushed. These particles do not shrink, and mixing them through the body reduces overall shrinkage and opens channels for water to escape during drying.

This matters more than it sounds. A pot dries from the outside in. If the surface closes before the interior water can leave, the trapped moisture turns to steam in the kiln and the piece cracks or bursts. Grog keeps the body open enough for that water to find its way out, and it gives the clay tooth, which is the slightly gritty resistance that lets a potter build a taller wall without it collapsing.

A heavily grogged body is the usual choice for large forms and for anything that will be cycled through heat, such as a baking dish. A smooth, lightly grogged body is chosen for smaller pieces where the surface will be handled and a gritty foot would scratch.

Iron, and where the colour comes from

Most stoneware is some shade of buff, tan, grey or brown before it is glazed, and the colour is almost entirely a question of iron content. A body with very little iron fires near white. A body carrying two or three percent iron fires a warm toasted brown, and the same iron will bleed faintly through a thin glaze, which is one of the ways a stoneware surface acquires depth that a white factory blank does not have.

Iron also affects how the body responds to the kiln atmosphere. Fired with plenty of oxygen, iron stays in a form that reads as tan or rust. Fired in a reducing atmosphere, where the fuel is starved of air and pulls oxygen out of the materials themselves, the same iron shifts toward grey, green and olive. Two pots from one bag of clay can look like different materials depending on what the kiln was doing around them.

Why this shows up in the finished pot

None of this is abstract. A body chosen for a large bowl will be coarse, dark and forgiving, and the finished bowl will feel slightly sandy on its unglazed foot. A body chosen for mugs will be smoother and paler and will take a bright glaze more cleanly. A body that has been pushed a cone hotter than it wants will be very strong and slightly warped.

Reading the foot of a pot tells most of the story: the colour of the bare clay, the coarseness of the particles, and whether the body looks dense and closed or slightly open at the edges. It is the one place on a finished piece where the raw material is still visible, and it is worth looking at before anything else.
